Kutch maintained its own coinage well into the twentieth century under an arrangement that allowed princely states to strike coins provided they acknowledged British paramountcy — typically through the inclusion of the reigning monarch's name alongside the local ruler's. Khengarji III, who held the gaddi of Kutch from 1876 until his death in 1942, was one of the longer-serving rulers in the region and navigated the political pressures of the late colonial period with considerable skill, earning the title of His Highness and multiple British honors.
