1 Kopeck - Peter I / Ivan V With the name of Ivan

Russia's dual-tsardom of 1682 to 1696 was the product of a succession crisis following the death of Feodor III, which left two half-brothers — the sickly Ivan V and the ten-year-old Peter — jointly elevated under the regency of their sister Sophia. Wire money of this period was struck in the names of both rulers simultaneously, creating parallel series that are distinguished solely by which tsar's name appears in the legend. This piece carries Ivan's name, the elder but intellectually disabled co-tsar who held nominal seniority while Peter would eventually rule alone after Ivan's death in 1696.
