Josef Wenzel I issued this thaler during his tenure as a field marshal in Austrian imperial service — a role that consumed far more of his attention than the administration of his tiny principality. Liechtenstein's coinage output was sporadic and politically symbolic rather than economically necessary, given the territory's minuscule population and near-total dependence on Habsburg commercial networks.
The Davenport reference places this squarely within the Konventionstaler standard established by the Austro-Bavarian monetary convention of 1753, which fixed the thaler at 10 per Cologne mark of silver.
