The Kipper- und Wipperzeit ("clipping and culling time") of 1619–1623 was one of the most destructive currency debasements in Central European history, driven largely by the financial demands of the Thirty Years' War. Princes and minting authorities across the Holy Roman Empire raced to coin debased currency, collect seigniorage, and pass the inflated coins to neighbors before the scheme collapsed — which it inevitably did, catastrophically, around 1622–1623.
Ferdinand II's Graz mint was among the Imperial participants in this spiral. The designation "150" refers to the face value in Kreuzer — a wildly inflated fiction given the actual silver content. When the bubble burst, the coins were repudiated at a fraction of their nominal value, leaving ordinary holders ruined.
