The Banque Nationale du Laos was established in 1954 following the dissolution of the Banque de l'Indochine's monopoly over the former French territories, and this 1 Kip belongs to the institution's first issued series — the founding notes of an independent Lao monetary system. Security Banknote Company of Philadelphia handled the printing, an unusual choice given that newly independent Francophone states more commonly turned to European security printers in this period.
