The Keping issues of Sumatra emerged from the patchwork of Dutch colonial administration and local sultanate authority that characterized the island in the early nineteenth century. These copper tokens circulated where official colonial coinage rarely reached, filling a practical gap in small-denomination trade rather than issuing from any centralized mint with formal authorization. The 1832 date places this piece squarely within the period following the Anglo-Dutch Treaty of 1824, which had formally ceded British interests in Sumatra to the Netherlands.
