Tirumala Deva Raya issued this copper kasu during one of the most catastrophic periods in South Indian history. The Battle of Talikota in January 1565 had effectively destroyed Vijayanagara as a functioning imperial capital — the city was sacked and burned over several months following the Deccan Sultanates' coalition victory. Tirumala, who had served as a general at Talikota, evacuated the royal treasury south to Penukonda and declared himself king in 1565, ruling a drastically diminished successor state. These kasu were struck not from a thriving empire but from its remnant.
