Additional information

The Madurai Nayaks governed as nominally subordinate rulers under the Vijayanagara Empire before asserting effective independence following Vijayanagara's collapse after the Battle of Talikota in 1565. Their coinage, including this kasu, reflects that transition — local administrative authority expressing itself through a controlled copper currency that served the dense market networks of the Tamil interior. The "Sri Vira" epithet attached to this series is a honorific adopted by several Nayak rulers, which complicates precise attribution to any single reign within the dynasty's long run.
