Beschrijving voorzijde Stylized standing figure of Lord Rama depicted in full length at center, rendered in the bold, schematic manner characteristic of late Nayaka copper coinage. The deity is shown facing forward with arms extended, holding a bow, with a large circular head ornament above. The design is set within an irregular, raised field with no formal border, typical of the crudely struck hammered kasu issues of this period.

Aanvullende informatie

Sri Mangamma ruled the Madurai Nayaka kingdom as regent following the death of her husband Vijaya Ranga Chokkanatha's father, making her one of the few women to exercise sovereign minting authority in early modern South India. Her reign ended under Mughal pressure when Aurangzeb's regional commanders moved against the Carnatic, and she was eventually deposed around 1706. The kasu denomination itself was the fundamental small-denomination copper unit of the Nayaka monetary system, used in local bazaar transactions throughout the Kaveri delta region.
