The Thanjavur Maratha kingdom was a successor state carved out after Venkoji — half-brother of Shivaji — took the city from the Bijapur Sultanate in 1676. It persisted under Maratha rule until the British absorbed it in 1799, making this kasu one of the more obscure survivors of a dynasty that outlasted most of its Deccan contemporaries by decades.
