The Madurai Nayaks collapsed as a ruling dynasty in 1736, but coinage attributed to the kingdom continued circulating — and being struck — well into the period of expanding Company influence. The "overstrike" designation here is the critical detail: these pieces were produced by counterstamping or striking over earlier host coins, a practice that tells you more about metal scarcity and administrative improvisation than any mint record could. Identifying the host type beneath is a minor specialist discipline in itself.
