The Mauryan karshapana occupies an unusual place in monetary history: these punch-marked pieces were not struck in the conventional sense but produced by punching a series of symbols onto blank silver pieces, each punch applied by a different official or authority as a form of authentication. Series Va falls within the reign of Chandragupta Maurya and his son Bindusara, the period during which the empire expanded across nearly the entire Indian subcontinent. Kautilya's Arthashastra, the administrative treatise associated with Chandragupta's court, actually describes the state mint operation — the Lakshanadhyaksha — in enough detail to confirm these were centrally controlled issues, not merchant tokens.
The consistent 3.4–3.5g weight standard traces to the earlier Shatamana system, rigorously maintained across the dynasty's mints.
