Kosikiputra Satakarni — identified by the metronymic "son of Kosiki" — ruled the Satavahana dynasty during a period of sustained pressure from the Western Kshatrapas in the northwest. The Newas-Paithan type designation reflects the two principal find-spot clusters where these bronzes surface most frequently, Nevasa in the Ahmednagar district and Paithan on the Godavari, the latter being the Satavahana capital of Pratishthana. Coin-find distribution from these sites has been the primary tool for attributing otherwise uninscribed bronzes to specific reigns.
