Hetoum II ruled Cilician Armenia in one of the most fractured reigns in the kingdom's history — abdicating three separate times, twice to enter a Franciscan monastery, before being murdered alongside his nephew Levon III by the Mongol commander Bilarghu in 1307. The double cross type spans nearly the full arc of that turbulent tenure, issued across a period when Cilicia was navigating the competing pressures of Mongol suzerainty to the east and Crusader fragmentation to the west.
Nercessian 398 is a copper kardez, the workhorse denomination of Armenian Cilician fiduciary coinage.
