The Pahang Kumpani tokens were issued by a private tin mining concern operating in Pahang during the period when the British were still consolidating influence over the interior Malay states. Because company scrip of this kind circulated as de facto currency among indentured and contract laborers who rarely left the mining compound, these pieces saw intense local use — which makes genuinely uncirculated survivors uncommon. Tin, the very commodity the workers were extracting, was also the metal used to pay them.
