Obverse description Central square hole surrounded by four large Chinese characters arranged in cruciform fashion within a plain inner border and outer rim. The four ideograms, read top to bottom and right to left in the traditional manner, form the legend 乾盛寶通, meaning 'Currency of Kian Sheng.' The characters are rendered in a bold, regular (kaishu) script typical of cast tin coinage from the Malay Peninsula. The field between the square hole and the inner border is plain.
