The Later Saffarids of Sijistan were a residual dynasty clinging to power in the Helmand River basin long after the main Saffarid line had collapsed, functioning effectively as vassals under successive eastern Iranian overlords. By the early 13th century their autonomy was narrowing rapidly, squeezed between the Ghurids to the east and the expanding Khwarazmian Empire to the north. Rukn al-Din Abu Mansur's issues date to precisely the moment the Khwarazmian shah Muhammad II was consolidating control across Khorasan and Sijistan alike.
Billon coinage of this region and period is notoriously difficult to attribute cleanly — the A#1430 reference places this within a small, poorly documented group.
