Jalal al-Din Firuz Khalji founded the Khalji dynasty in 1290 after engineering the removal of the Mamluk Sultanate's last ruler — a transition more political coup than clean succession. He was already in his seventies at accession, considered by his own nobles too old and too conciliatory to last. His reign ended when his nephew and son-in-law Alauddin had him murdered in 1296, then marched on Delhi with the plunder from an unauthorized raid on Devagiri.
Billon jitals of this reign are the small change of that turbulent transition — struck in a debased silver-copper alloy that had been the workhorse denomination of northern Indian trade for generations before and after the Khaljis.
