Deva Raya II ruled the Vijayanagara Empire at its administrative and military peak, conducting campaigns into Ceylon and extending tributary relationships across the Deccan. He was notably unusual among his contemporaries for recruiting Muslim cavalry and archers into his army — a pragmatic military decision that scandalized some Hindu advisors but gave him a decisive edge against the Bahmani Sultanate. The Portuguese traveler Abdur Razzaq, who visited the capital Vijayanagara in 1443, described a city of staggering wealth and population, the copper small change of which would have included issues precisely like this jital.
