Issued to commemorate the Sixth National Games held in Guangdong province in November 1987, this piece belongs to a short series of brass sporting coins that the People's Bank released specifically for the event. The National Games had only been revived in 1959 and the Sixth edition was the largest to that point, with Guangdong chosen partly as a signal of the province's economic ascendancy during the early reform era.
Brass sports commemoratives from this series circulated poorly — most were absorbed by collectors immediately — leaving survivors in surprisingly original condition.
