Taiwan's aluminium 1 Jiao was issued under the Republic of China government — the administration that had retreated to the island following the Communist victory on the mainland in 1949. By the mid-1960s, the ROC was maintaining the legal fiction of governing all of China, which meant its coinage carried the Republic's year dating from 1912, not the Western calendar. The magnesium addition, marginal as it is, was standard practice for hardening commercial-grade aluminium sheet stock used in small-denomination coinage across Asian mints during this period.
