Obverse description Within a polylobed inner circle, a double-headed eagle is depicted in the field, rendered in the late medieval Gothic style characteristic of Frisian municipal coinage. The eagle, shown displayed with both heads facing outward, serves as the heraldic device of the city of Bolsward. A circular Gothic legend in uncial lettering surrounds the central device, reading along the outer border. The coin shows the irregular flan and uneven strike typical of fifteenth-century hammered silver issues.
