Søren Norby was a Danish admiral who held Gotland as a semi-autonomous fief, and by 1522 he was playing a increasingly dangerous game — nominally loyal to the Danish crown while negotiating independently with Sweden, the Habsburgs, and the Livonian Order. These coins were struck during that window of personal rule on the island, before his position collapsed entirely and he fled to lead a failed rebellion in Scania in 1525.
Hauberg 119 is among the scarcer of his Visby issues.
