Gaute Ivarsson served as Archbishop of Nidaros from 1474 until his death in 1510, making him the longest-serving archbishop of the see in the pre-Reformation period. His tenure coincided with a prolonged struggle between Danish royal authority and ecclesiastical independence in Norway — a tension that shaped the very decision to issue independent archiepiscopal coinage at Nidaros rather than rely solely on crown-issued currency.
