Gaute Ivarsson served as Archbishop of Nidaros from 1474 until his death in 1510, making him one of the longest-tenured prelates to hold that see in the medieval period. The archbishopric's right to strike coin was a jealously guarded privilege, and Nidaros issues from this period circulated primarily across western and central Norway, where ecclesiastical economic authority remained unusually strong relative to the Danish crown.
The hvid denomination itself was a Danish-influenced small silver unit that filtered into Norwegian ecclesiastical minting during the fifteenth century. Survivors are scarce — Schive documented very few die varieties for this type.
