Christian II seized Gotland from the Lübeck-backed administration in 1520, the same year he carried out the Stockholm Bloodbath. This hvid was struck at Visby almost certainly in that charged window of Danish reassertion over the Baltic island, which had changed hands repeatedly between Denmark and the Hanseatic League throughout the preceding century. The "short flag" designation distinguishes this die variety from the long-flag type catalogued separately by Hauberg — a subtle but taxonomically meaningful difference that remains the primary tool for organizing this scarce local issue.
