Ukraine introduced this aluminium bronze hryvnia in 2004 as part of a broader coinage reform that followed the catastrophic hyperinflation of the early 1990s, when the karbovanets lost value so rapidly the government eventually redenominated at 100,000 to 1. The choice of Volodymyr the Great as the anchor figure for the primary circulation coin was deliberate nation-building — he ruled Kyivan Rus at its territorial peak and introduced Christianity to the region in 988, giving independent Ukraine a medieval precedent older than either Russia or Poland could easily contest.
