Obverse description The obverse carries a central portrait vignette of Volodymyr the Great (Grand Duke of Kyiv, 980–1015), rendered in intaglio against a fine guilloche underprint. Volodymyr is credited with uniting the Eastern Slavic lands under Kyiv's dominion and initiating the Christianization of Rus in 988–989. The inscription НАЦІОНАЛЬНИЙ БАНК УКРАЇНИ arcs above, with the denomination ОДНА ГРИВНЯ and the subject's name ВОЛОДИМИР ВЕЛИКИЙ appearing alongside the numeral 1.
