Nakhshab, in the Kashkadarya oasis of what is now southern Uzbekistan, issued its own coinage during a period when the region sat between competing spheres — Kushan imperial authority to the east and the fragmented successor states of the former Greco-Bactrian world. The Ashtat type is understood to derive ultimately from Seleucid prototypes, filtered through generations of local imitation until the original source became nearly unrecognizable. These are civic issues, not royal ones; the authority behind them was a city, not a named king.
