Obverse description The Hessian lion passant guardant, crowned, rampant on a decorative pedestal or plinth, occupying the central field. The lion, a traditional heraldic device of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Cassel, is depicted in high relief with its right forepaw raised. The overall style is consistent with late 18th-century German provincial coinage.
