A fine milled border runs around the inner edge of the octagonal flan. The overall composition is symmetrical and typical of small-denomination Augsburg coinage of the mid-eighteenth century. |

Augsburg's municipal coinage in the mid-eighteenth century occupied an awkward position — the city retained its imperial free status and minting rights, but the Heller denomination had long ceased to function as a practical silver coin in everyday commerce. Pattern strikes like this one were almost certainly produced for presentation or collector purposes rather than any genuine monetary proposal, a common practice among German civic mints trying to demonstrate technical competence to potential patrons or document their die work for posterity.
The Forster/Schmelzing reference places this among a small cluster of Augsburg pattern issues from the 1750s. Survivors are rare in any form.
