| Beschrijving voorzijde | Central field features the crowned coat of arms of Hesse-Darmstadt, depicting a rampant lion facing left within a shield surmounted by a royal crown. The abbreviated legend 'G.H. K.M.' (Großherzogtum Hessen Kursmünze) is inscribed in the field, divided on either side of the shield. The design is rendered in a clean, classical style typical of mid-nineteenth-century German state coinage. |

| Aanvullende informatie |
Louis III inherited a Hesse-Darmstadt already politically fractured by the revolutions of 1848, and the small copper heller denominations struck across his reign were the coins most likely to reach the hands of laborers and market vendors — the very population that had been rioting in the streets of Darmstadt that spring. The Grand Duchy had backed the Frankfurt Parliament's constitutional project, then watched it collapse entirely by 1849, reverting to the German Confederation's conservative order.
AKS 132 covers the full run through 1855 without distinguishing individual year varieties by rarity — though collectors working the series have noted that later dates are meaningfully harder to find in unimpaired condition.
