Obverse description The crowned arms of Hesse-Darmstadt occupy the central field, depicting the quartered escutcheon with the Hessian lion rampant on horizontally lined ground, surmounted by a grand ducal crown with arched bands and prominent orb finial. A fine beaded border frames the entire design. The abbreviated legend flanks the shield to either side, reading 'G.H.' at the left and 'K.M.' at the right, denoting 'Großherzoglich Hessische Kursmünze' (Grand Ducal Hessian currency coin). The execution is characteristic of mid-19th-century German state coinage, with precise relief work on the heraldic elements.
