Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt was one of the smaller Thuringian principalities, and by 1769 Louis Günther II was ruling a territory of roughly 850 square kilometers with a population that barely justified its own coinage. The Heller was the lowest denomination in circulation — a coin so marginal in value that minting it in copper was itself a concession to practicality over prestige.
Copper issues from the minor German states of this period were frequently struck on poorly prepared planchets, and this type is no exception to that tendency among the series.
