Hohenlohe-Neuenstein was among the smallest of the Franconian imperial counties, and its coinage in the early 1620s was produced directly into the chaos of the Kipper- und Wipperzeit — the great debasement crisis of 1619–1623 in which petty German princes, cities, and ecclesiastical lords raced to mint debased small coinage before their neighbors could spend it first. That this piece is struck in silver at all is notable; much of the heller-denomination output from this period was debased to the point of being copper with a silver wash.
Kraft VII ruled Hohenlohe-Neuenstein from 1610 until his death in 1641.
