| Obverse description | Oval shield bearing the three-fold arms of the Palatinate, Bavaria, and the imperial orb, flanked by two upright palm branches. The electoral bonnet (Kurhut) surmounts the shield and divides the date, with the mint mark appearing below in the field. The design is rendered in a simple, low-relief style typical of late 18th-century Bavarian minor coinage. |

Charles Theodore inherited Bavaria reluctantly in 1777, preferring his Palatinate territories, and spent much of his reign attempting to trade Bavaria to Austria in exchange for the Austrian Netherlands — a scheme blocked twice by Prussian intervention. These small copper hellers were struck in the waning years of his administration, by which point his unpopularity in Bavaria was near total. He died in February 1799, and the line passed to Maximilian IV Joseph, who would eventually become the first King of Bavaria.
