The K.u.k. Kriegsgefangenenlager at Aschach an der Donau was one of dozens of Austro-Hungarian prisoner-of-war camps that issued internal scrip during the First World War — a deliberate policy to prevent prisoners from accumulating currency usable beyond the wire. These camp notes circulated only within the enclosure and were theoretically worthless the moment a prisoner was transferred or repatriated.
Haas & Comp. of Steyr supplied printing services to several regional institutions, making them a practical choice for a camp located on the Danube in Upper Austria. The 1 Heller denomination is the lowest in the Aschach series, reflecting the genuinely small transactions — canteen purchases, largely — for which this scrip was designed.
