This coin dates from that administered period under Landgraf Friedrich II of Hesse-Kassel, who was simultaneously renting tens of thousands of his subjects as soldiers to the British crown for service in the American Revolutionary War — a transaction that funded much of the region's coinage and infrastructure while depopulating its villages.
