Obverse description Crowned nettle-leaf shield arms of Schaumburg-Hessen displayed in the centre of the field, the crown appearing above the escutcheon. The initial 'F' appears to the left of the shield, referencing the reigning Landgrave Frederick II. The design is unadorned by a peripheral legend, with the heraldic motif occupying the full field.

Additional information

Schaumburg-Hessen was a tiny landgraviate whose ruling line expired in 1760 with the death of Friedrich I, after which the territory passed to Hesse-Kassel as a provincial administration. This coin dates from that administered period under Landgraf Friedrich II of Hesse-Kassel, who was simultaneously renting tens of thousands of his subjects as soldiers to the British crown for service in the American Revolutionary War — a transaction that funded much of the region's coinage and infrastructure while depopulating its villages.
