Obverse description Left-facing bust of Emperor Maximilian I, depicted in high relief in the Renaissance medallic tradition, wearing an elaborate jewelled crown and armoured pauldron with a decorated collar. The emperor's hair falls to shoulder length beneath the crown, and the portrait is rendered with individualized, lifelike features characteristic of the Hall Mint's accomplished die-cutters. The date 1514 appears in the lower field beneath the truncation. A continuous Latin legend in Gothic-influenced lettering encircles the portrait within a beaded border, reading MAXIMILIANVS • ROMANORVM • IMPERATOR • SEMPER • AVGVSTVS • ARCHIDVX • AVSTRIE 1514.
