Obverse description Three-quarter length effigy of Emperor Maximilian I facing right, crowned and clad in armor, with a floral scepter resting over his right shoulder and his left hand grasping a sword at the cross-guard. The portrait is rendered in the bold, high-relief style characteristic of early sixteenth-century South Netherlandish die-cutting. The figure is contained within an inner pearl border. The surrounding legend in Gothic-influenced Roman capitals identifies the emperor as Ever-August Roman Emperor.
