1 Guldiner - Frederick II

Frederick II, Elector Palatine, struck this large silver guldiner at a moment when the Wittelsbach hold on the Upper Palatinate was firmly established but the denomination itself was still far from standardized across the Empire. The guldiner — precursor to the later reichstaler — occupied an awkward monetary position in the 1530s, valued against gold gulden by regional convention rather than imperial decree. The Reichsmünzordnung that would attempt to fix such relationships was still nearly fifteen years away.

Schultess-Rechberg 2728 is a notably scarce citation for this type.
