Breisach sat on the Rhine at one of its most strategically contested crossings, and the city's minting rights were exercised sporadically and with some defensiveness — a small imperial free city asserting privileges that larger neighbors perpetually questioned. The Guldiner-weight silver piece was already an archaic denomination by the 1580s, when most minting activity had shifted toward the Reichstaler standard established in 1566. Breisach's continued use of the Guldiner specification at this late date is an oddity the Dav GT reference acknowledges without fully resolving.
