By 1840, Willem I had already abdicated — he signed his renunciation on October 7th of that year, handing the throne to Willem II. Coins struck in 1840 under his name therefore represent the final months of a reign that had grown deeply unpopular, particularly following the costly and humiliating separation of Belgium in 1830, which drained the Dutch treasury for the better part of the decade.
The .945 fineness of this gulden is notably higher than the .945 standard would later be quietly adjusted away from under subsequent monetary reforms.
