Printed in New York by the American Bank Note Company, this note was produced for the Netherlands East Indies government-in-exile after Japan had already occupied the archipelago. The Netherlands itself was under German occupation, so the colonial administration operated from London and Washington, issuing currency it had no immediate territory to circulate in.
When Allied forces began recovering ground in the Pacific, notes from this series were shipped forward for use in liberated areas — a currency printed in New York, intended for islands under Japanese control, issued by a government sitting in exile. Some reached circulation only in the war's final weeks.
