West-Friesland was one of the seven sovereign provinces of the Dutch Republic, each with the constitutional right to strike its own coinage — a decentralized arrangement that produced enormous variety and chronic headaches for merchants trying to reconcile exchange rates across provincial issues. By the late 1780s, the province was operating under the shadow of the Patriot Revolution, the internal Dutch political crisis that pitted pro-French reformers against the Orangist establishment and effectively paralyzed the Republic's institutions.
The Delmonte reference places this among the better-documented Dutch provincial series, though die variations across the 1786–1790 window are not uncommon given the political disruptions of the period.
