The 1 Gulden Silver Voucher of 1914 was an emergency measure, rushed into circulation when the outbreak of World War One triggered an immediate hoarding of silver coins across the Netherlands. The public pulled hard coin out of commerce almost overnight, and the Ministry of Finance responded by issuing these small paper notes as direct substitutes — theoretically redeemable for silver but practically functioning as a replacement for it.
The printing run of over twelve million is substantial, and worn survivors are common. Uncirculated examples are a different matter; the small size accelerated wear, and many saw heavy daily use before the silver coinage situation stabilised.
