Obverse description Armored knight on horseback advancing to the right, sword raised in the right hand and shield bearing the quartered arms of Gelderland and Jülich displayed on the left arm; the horse is depicted in a prancing posture with elaborate trappings. The figure occupies the central field within a beaded inner circle, with the legend surrounding the equestrian motif. The design is characteristic of the late medieval 'rijdergulden' (rider gulden) type, executed in the bold, somewhat irregular style typical of hammered gold coinage of the Low Countries.
