Obverse description Bare-headed right-facing bust of Ludwig (Louis II), Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse, rendered in high relief with finely detailed hair and a prominent moustache. The portrait occupies the central field in a naturalistic Neoclassical style characteristic of the engraver Carl Friedrich Voigt. The legend LUDWIG ERBGROSHERZOG VON HESSEN curves around the upper periphery, with the engraver's signature VOIGT incised in small capitals at the base of the truncation. The coin is bordered by a finely executed beaded rim.
