Obverse description Bare-headed effigy of Ludwig (Louis II), Hereditary Grand Duke of Hesse, in left-facing profile, rendered with fine detail including wavy hair and a short mustache. The truncation is clean and unadorned. The engraver's name VOIGT appears in small capitals at the base of the neck truncation. A circular legend in Latin script runs along the inner border of the toothed rim, reading LUDWIG ERBGROSHERTZOG VON HESSEN.
